Freighter Star is not sinking, salvage is under way
Not Cambodian, but Russian cargo vessel Star is not sinking, salvage is under way with the arrival of a salvage tug Lazurit at around midday July 7 2012. Salvors and 8 crew remaining on board are trying to put water ingress under control and pump out water to get access to ruptured valve. Three pumps are already engaged. Latest reports said vessel is to be towed to Vladivostok after sealing the valve. Vessel is Cambodia-flagged, but owned and operated by a Russian company based in Vladivostok. 8 crew out of 16, not directly involved in salvage, went on board of m/v Vasiliy Golovnin as a precation. m/v Star was en route from Qingdao China to Korsakov, Sakhalin, loaded with cement and containers. Cambodian freighter "Star" in distress in Sea of Japan, 8 crewmembers evacuated
The freighter "Star" flying the flag of Cambodia with a Russian crew on board is sinking in the Sea of Japan (July 7,2012). Eight people were rescued by the motorship "Vasily Golovnin" of the Far Eastern Shipping Company, while eight other crew members remain on the distressed vessel, struggling to keep it afloat. It is reported that the reason for the accident was a faulty valve that shuts-off access to the systems, communicating with the sea water. Source: RIA, "Russia 24"
