Laker run aground in Lake St. Clair

Wed May 08 22:19:27 CEST 2013 Timsen

Coast Guard officials responded to the "Spruceglen" that had run aground in Lake St. Clair on May 7, 2013, at about 6 p.m. a little more than a mile offshore from Grosse Pointe. The ship experienced trouble around 6 p.m. and the captain decided to pull over so they didn’t impede traffic on the waterway while it waited for a tug to be pulled off again. It did not have anything to do with water levels, but was a mechanical issue. To ground the ship was a conscious decision by the captain. There were about 22 crew members on the Spruceglen. No one was injured and there was no damage to the freighter. The U.S. Coast Guard was also on scene. Two tugs from Detroit freed the vessel in the afternoon of May 8 around 2.30 p.m. Reports with photos: http://windsor.ctvnews.ca/freighter-runs-aground-after-mechanical-problems-near-grosse-pointe-1.1272582#ixzz2SjbM18Sd http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/story/2013/05/08/wdr-freighter-runs-aground-detroit-river.html http://www.thetimesherald.com/article/20130508/NEWS05/305080002/1002/rss?nclick_check=1
