Fire in accomodation area

A fire broke out aboard the 'Sparta' at the port of Murmansk on May 13, 2023, at 1.50 p.m. The accommodation area was damaged on 45 cubic metres. The 17 crew members were safely evacuated from board. No injuries were reported. Two fire appliances and 27 firefighters attended the fire, which was extinguished at 3 p.m.

Beleaguered "Sparta" still in Taranaki

The "Sparta" remains in Port Taranaki after breaking down off North Cape en route to Fiji after suffering engine problems on Mar 30. Port Taranaki's most powerful tug, the "Tuakana", towed the vessel back to New Plymouth arriving on Apr 2. At the time of the breakdown, the "Sparta" had been chartered to a United States company. It has Russian officers and a Filipino crew. By May 13 the vessel was still tied up alongside the port's Breakwater Wharf while repairs were completed. The engine had clutch plate problems and the spare parts for the repair have since arrived. Repairs were expected to be completed by end of May. Repairs on Sparta coming to its end

The "Sparta" which is at Port Nelson since April 3, 2012, has been ice-strengthened and refitted and will meet all requirements for the coming Antarctic toothfish season after it was holed by submerged ice while longlining for toothfish in the Ross Sea. Its 32-member Russian and Indonesian crew members were stuck for 12 days until temporary repairs could be made and the South Korean icebreaker "Araon" could open a lane through the ice and escort the Sparta into open water. The "Sparta" has already passed New Zealand ship survey requirements and only some painting and other small jobs remained before it was ready to sail. It would be fishing under the rules of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). As well as ice-strengthening, the "Sparta" has undergone repairs to its main engines and generators and a range of other work has been carried out, principally by Nelson engineering firm Aimex Service Group. During its stay the "Sparta" was tied up for several months near the Amaltal base off Akersten St before a stint on the Calwell Slip. Now it is docked at the Kingsford Quay. A 10-member skeleton crew has lived on board since April which has been treated extremely well by the Nelson community. The ship is due to sail on Nov 15.
