Barge sank after collision with Somtrans XIII
The "Coxswain", 381 ts (ENI-No.: 1820706),, capsized and sank on May 26, 2018, at 5.30 p.m. in the Dordtse Kil, which connects the Hollands Diep with the Oude Maas, after the collision with the "Somtrans XIII", 6610 ts (EU-No.: 02327684), which was coming from Amsterdam, near 's Gravendeel. Both ships were heading in the same direction at the time of the accident. The crew of the "Coxswain" was saved by nearby leisure boats. The French skipper was slightly injured. The sunken ship was loaded with artificial fertilizer and had sailed from Sint Laurenshaven in Pernis in the morning. First measurements of the fire brigade showed that the cargo did not cause a pollution. However, fuel was leaking from the ship's tanks. To prevent it from spreading, protective equipment has been placed around the ship which was resting bottom up in the fairway with the bow protruding from the water. The Dordtse Kil was blocked for larger ships, while inland vessels could pass the site slowly under supervision. The "RWS 71" of Rijkswaterstaat was on scene. The "Somtrans XIII" proceeded to 's Gravendeel with own power after the accident. The police launched an investigation.
