Trawler assisted in rescue of fisherman
A fisherman was rescued in the early morning of Feb 17, 2020, from a small fishing boat, just north of Vogar, Reykjanes, in Southwest Iceland, after his boat had suffered engine failure and drifted fast towards the shore in high winds. The fisherman requested help shortly after midnight. Working in very windy conditions and high waves, rescue teams from Suðurnes and the crew of the 'Sóley Sigurjóns GK' succeeded in getting a line to the boat and taking it into tow. Since the fisherman was exhausted, the team decided to send a rescue worker by an inflatable boat over to the fishing boat to assist him. The fishing boat was subsequently towed to Hafnarfjörður. Conditions were extremely difficult, and the rescue operation was finished only at 6 a.m. Report with video: https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/news/2020/02/17/fisherman_rescued_in_high_winds_video/
Trawler disabled by engine room fire
On May 17, 2019, the "Sóleyja Sigurjón" suffered a fire in the engine room in the Denmark Strait, 90 miles north of Iceland, and issued a mayday call at 9.12 p.m. The patrol boat "Týr" headed towards the casualty to investigate the conditions aboard the vessel. The rescue vessel "Sigurvin", which was launched from Siglufjörður with two firefighters on board, was stood down after the fire seemed to be put out by activating the fire extinguishing system. The trawler "Múlabergið’" rendezvoused with the shrimp trawler as well as the helicopter "TF Líf" at 11.40 p.m. Five smoke divers of the "Týr" entered the engine room after its arrival on May 18 around 4 a.m. to assess the conditions and find remaining hot spots in the morning of May 18. Two of the eight crewmembers were hoisted aboard the "TF Lif" and taken to Akureyri aboard the helicopter. It was then decided that the "Múlaberg" would tow the disabled trawler towards Akureyri. The tug "Seifur" (IMO: 9832896) then took over to pull the heavily damaged ship to a mooring. The trawler was to be taken to Reykjavik for repairs.
