Lithuanian master of Perseus charged for drunken navigation
On Feb 12 the "Perseus" reached Kiel after having been released by the Danish authorities. The ship had been stopped 10-20 meters from a pylon of the Great Belt Bridge on Feb 10 at 7 p.m. after having sailed outside the fairway. Despite several warnings on all channels the ship continued in a zigzag course until it stopped in the last moment. The 56-year-old Lithuanian captain was then charged with drunken navigation and blood samples were taken. After the shipping company sent a new captain, the Maritime Assistance Service released the vessel on behalf of the Danish Maritime Authority. It finally reached Kiel North Port on Feb 15. Near miss in Great Belt
On Feb 9, 2016, at 6 p.m. the "Perseus", while enroute from Odense to Kiel, was in danger of an allision with the Eastern pylon of the the Great Belt Bridge. The bridge was closed to traffic in both directions for a few minutes on behalf of the Danish Maritime Authority after the automatic alarm of the bridge when a ship gets off course was activated. The "Perseus" managed to get back into the fairway before hitting the bridge after having warned by the Traffic Control Center minutes before the impact. A vessel of the Danish Navy, which was in the area, was sent to the "Perseus" to investigate the matter, regarding a possible engine failure, navigation fault or other reasons for the incident. For this purpose, the "Perseus" was advised to drop anchor off Agersø island. The Police took tests from the captain, a 56-year old Lithuanian, suspecting intoxication. The result was to become known on Feb 11.
Collision in the Kiel Canal
On July 28, 2013, the "Perseus" enroute from Oxelosund to Hamburg, was in collision with the Danish tug "Westsund" which, jointly with the German tug "Vorwärts" was transporting the barge "SB 7020" from Rotterdam to Sassnitz in the Kiel Canal. At Buchholzer Moor the tow came perpendicular to the fairway. The "Perseus" remarked that the ships were turning to port and tried to go full astern but hit with its foreship against the port side bow of the "Westsund". Both vessels suffered hull damage. The "Westsund" was further damaged at the stern when the "SB 7020" hit the stopping ship. The tow was advisedto berth in Rendsburg, and the "Perseus" docked at the South Quay in Brunsbüttel. It proceeded to Hamburg at 1 p.m. and docked at warehouse 84 at 5 p.m. Short time later it proceeded to the Norder Yard for some repairs before returning to the warehouse on July 29 at 2 p.m.
