Ship and crew abandoned in Rotterdam

Mon Mar 20 21:01:09 CET 2023 Timsen

Eight crew members of the 'Blue Sky iII' have been stuck at a shipyard in Rotterdam for months. They have nowhere to go because the Greek ship owner refuses to pay their salaries. The icebreaker was taken over a year ago by the Greek owner Green Fleet Navigation from a Dutch company. The vessel was moved to a shipyard in Rotterdam-Beverwaard, where it has been docked for almost a year now. The seven crew members (between 25 and 55 years old) come from Myanmar and Russia, the captain Nishanta Kelum from Sri Lanka. The hopelessness was leadimg to mutual tensions, especially with the son of the owner who supervises on board the ship. The men don't get enough money to buy food. Inspector Aswin Noordermeer of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) calleds it a harrowing situation. He first heard about the conditions on board in November 2022. The crew members receive extra food and help from volunteers. The Seaport Police and Labor Inspectorate are also closely monitoring the situation. The shipyard initially supplied the ship with shore power and water, but stopped doing so after a few months when the bills were not paid. According toyard owner Jochem van Gink, there is still an outstanding invoice of more than 50,000 Euros. He is considering a lawsuit against the Greek owner if payment is delayed. Thanks to a guarantee from the ITF, he can now provide the ship with water and electricity again. Inspector Noordermeer of ITF has informed the Greek owner of the abuses several times, but has not received a response. Noordermeer has no idea what the owner ultimately plans to do with the ship. According to the captain, he wants to turn it into a pusher, but the ship does not have the right certificates for this. Partly for this reason, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate detained the ship at the end of February.
