Tug rescued sole survivor of boat with 40 people
Rescue crews recovered one body but hopes dimmed for 38 other people lost at sea from a capsized boat off Florida's coast. The SAR operation stretched through a second full day on Jan 26. One lone survivor was rescued from the overturned in rough seas in the morning of Jan 23. He was found clinging to the overturned vessel on Jan 25 and reported the boathad left the Bahamas' Bimini islands, about 50 miles east of Miami, in the night of Jan 22. The vessel capsized the next morning about 45 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet midway between Miami and Cape Canaveral. The survivor was spotted at around 8 a.m. by a crew member of the 'Signet Intruder' which was towing a large barge that was 2,500 feet behind. It therefore took some finesse to get close enough to the vessel and not cause any waves to knock the man off. The crew immediately alerted the Coast Guard. Coast Guard cutters, helicopter teams, search planes and a U.S. Navy air crew crisscrossed an area spanning more than 1,300 square miles about the size of Rhode Island, between Bimini and Fort Pierce Inlet on Jan 26.
