Rescue authorities were hoping to reunite a rescued sailor with his cat after the pet remained on the "Shi Dai 8" that plucked the pair from a liferaft off the Australian Mid West coast. Grant MacDonald, 54, was flown by helicopter to Geraldton in the afternoon of Sep 12 after becoming ill aboard the ore carrier. MacDonald had set off a distress signal after his 13 m yacht "Osprey" had started taking on water in the morning of Sep 11 as he sailed home from Carnarvon. He was released from hospital on Sep 13 and authorities hoped to reunite him with his cat when the ship arrived in Geraldton port. Bulkcarrier recovered single-hand-sailor
The "Shi Dai 8" has rescued one sailor from a life raft, after he abandoned his 13-metre yacht "Osprey" off Western Australia’s Mid West coast after it began taking on water, north of Geraldton early on Sep 11, 2015. A private aircraft sighted the life raft and a flare 277 km north of Geraldton after being dispatched by AMSA, which received an emergency beacon signal at 7.45 a.m. The bulk carrier which was enroute from Qinhuangdao to Geraldton with an ETA of Sep 12 moved to recover the life raft with a rescue aircraft monitoring overhead. The sailor was from Perth and on the return leg of a trip to Carnarvon when he was forced to abandon his yacht.
