Fishery protection vessel saved distressed trimaran

Sun Jul 24 20:58:48 CEST 2022 Timsen

On July 22, 2022, the crew of the "Seefalke" brought a trimaran sailor to safety together with the sea rescuers from the Horumersiel and Helgoland stations of the DGzRS. North of the island of Spiekeroog, one of the floats had come loose on the trimaran in rough sea conditions, causing the mast to break. The skipper of the trimaran, who was on the way from Spiekeroog to Heligoland, was able to alert the MRCC Bremen shortly after 11 a.m. via radio. At the time, the fishing protection vessel was very close to the scene of the accident and immediately offered help. On site, the "Seefalke" launched a dinghy, took one man off the distressed vessel and transferred one of the own crew members to support the skipper. Shortly thereafter, the lifeboat 'Paul Lorenz' from the Horumersiel station and the 'Hermann Marewede' from the Helgoland station arrived. Together they managed to establish a towing connection However, the broken float filled with water, so that the distressed vessel was in danger of sinking. The broken rig, which was still hanging in the water with its sails, also hampered the towing attempts, as it threatened to damage the hulls which were still intact. As a result, the 'Hermann Marwede' and its daughter boat 'Verena' also transferred a sea rescuer to the trimaran. The rescuers used heavy equipment to cut the rig and floats, which were then taken on board the “Seefalke” by crane. Only then was it possible to bring the trimaran to safety in Hooksiel. The convoy arrived in port at around 4.30 p.m. At the time of the accident, there were north-westerly winds of around 5 Beaufort and a swell of 1.5 to 2 meters. On Aug 3, 2017, at 4.15 p.m. a crew member of the "Seefalke" collapsed on board the shp three kilometers East of Heligoland. The daughter boat "Verena“ of the lifeboat "Hermann Marwede" transferred two medically educated rescue men on board. A crew member of the "Seefalke" was medevaced by the lifeboat "Hermann Helms" of the DGzRS-station Cuxhaven in the morning of Oct 26. The man had collapsed at 6.30 a.m. aboard the ship which was heading from the Elbe estuary to Cuxhaven. The crew immediately notified rescue services via VHF. The "Hermann Helms" took aboard a medical and was alongside the "Seefalke" at 6.54 a.m. A crew member and the doctor were transferred aboard the ship. The patient meanwhile was consciousless and had to be stabilized first. The "Hermann Helms" escorted the "Seefalke“ to Cuxhaven where the man was transferred to a waiting ambulance.
