Barge towed to Fraser River
On May 31 the barge that began listing in Bazan Bay under tow of the "Seaspan Cutlass" has been towed to a tie-up facility in the Fraser River at Annacis Island, after a Mission facility had been considered. Prior to the move, the barge’s load of gravel was transferred to another barge which has also towed to the facility. The gravel was being carried for Vancouver Pile Driving. A Vancouver Pile Driving barge was involved in another incident this month, dumping up to 30,000 litres of diesel fuel into Esquimalt Harbour after breaking loose in high winds and running aground in Plumper Bay. In March, two Heavy Metal Marine barges ran aground near Clover Point after problems arose, also as a result of high winds. The tug disengaged from the barges to keep from being dragged. One barge was removed the next day and the other about two weeks later.
Barge resumed voyage
The barge that was towed by the "Seaspan Cutlass" and that ran into trouble in Bazan Bay, off the Saanich Peninsula, was due to continue its trip to a Mission facility in the night of May 30. Efforts qwew being made to unload the barge which, carrying gravel for Vancouver Driving, began listing to one side about 12:30 p.m. on May 28. The barge wasn’t taking on water. The tug and barge then crossed from the American to the Canadian side of the marine border and the Canadian Coast Guard vessel "Cape Naden" from Ganges was sent to monitor the situation. The "Cape Naden" made an assessment that there was no need for search-and-rescue intervention. Report with photo and video: http://www.cheknews.ca/efforts-move-listing-barge-181208/
Tug towed listing barge to Saanich Park
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria, Coast Guard Search and Rescue responded in the night to reports of a gravel loaded barge being towed by the "Seaspan Cutlass" which was taking on water as it headed north in U.S. waters through the Haro Strait. The barge loaded with dredged silt was anchored off the North Saanich Park north of Victoria on May 28, 2016. Later in the afternoon, the tug moved the barge farther south, and left it in a sheltered cove off of the Tsawout First Nation before returning to Esquimalt Harbour. The tug remained with the barge that was carrying material for the Vancouver Pile Driving before returnning to Esquimault. Seaspan suggested the problem was weather-related.
