Wreck removal plans considered

Tue Oct 15 10:49:25 CEST 2013 Timsen

Australian maritime authorities were still considering how best to remove the wreck of the "Seafaris" from the seabed off the far north Queensland coast after it caught fire and sank off Cow Bay, forcing 16 people overboard. Maritime Safety Queensland was reviewing two salvage plans from the boat's insurers. They will look at it in terms of the efficiency and economics of the plans and make a decision on which contractor they should choose but our focus is on safety and ensuring there's no further damage to the environment. MSQ was continuing to monitor the wreck ,and there were no further sign of large debris or leaking diesel. MSQ's main focus was on the diesel which may remain in the wreck and which needed to be secure before salvors may raise the wreck.

Fire which sank luxury yacht started in engine room - two slightly injured

Fri Oct 04 09:53:14 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Oct 3 at noon the 8 passengers and 8 crew reached the port of Cairns. Two had suffered slight injuries. In Cairns they were met by police and paramedic. The McCloy Group released a statement saying the fire started in the yacht's engine room. Jeff McCloy met with the captain, crew and guests in Cairns after they had reached Cairns. A Transport and Main Roads spokesman said work to salvage the boat would begin later this week and an investigation would be carried out. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority officers have collected debris from the boat and blasted a light sheen of diesel coming from the wreckage with fire hoses. On Oct 4 divers were expected on the site, arranged by the insurers and the owners. The main concern was to identify the wreck, ensure there was no seepage of diesel and if there was to patch those holes as quickly as possile. Superyacht explodes and sinks off Cairns, 16 abandon ship

Thu Oct 03 12:30:10 CEST 2013 arnekiel

On the final day of a dream holiday guests aboard a luxury superyacht sailing off Queensland were jolted awake by crew yelling "fire, fire, fire". Eight passengers and eight crew were aboard the 41 metre superyacht Seafaris when it caught fire and exploded before sinking off Cape Tribulation, north of Cairns, about 6am (AEST) on Thursday, Oct. 3. The group boarded life rafts and were rescued by a passing container ship that responded to a distress call. They were then transferred to two smaller boats before being taken to the Cairns marina about noon. The captain of the container ship says he heard at least two explosions on the yacht, which burnt for about two hours before sinking.
