The CROSS Med had been unable to contact the owner of the ship via satellite phone before. After contact was established, the owner reported that he was forced to abandon his ship which went on on fire for some reason, with his wife and their 2 year old child. All three were on a raft that threatened to deflate. The CROSS Med requested the assistance of the Spanish authorities which dispatched a helicopter and a lifeboat. At 10:17 a.m., the three castaways were recovered by the "Cap Camarat" which was enroute from Marseille to Bejaia which had been diverted to the area by the Spanish maritime authorities. After their rescue they were hoisted aboard the helicopter and repatriated on Menorca at 11:30 a.m. where they were supported by the hospital and the French consular services.
