Livestock carrier Abou Karim IV heading to justice after dumping dead cows in Baltic sea
Lebanese livestock carrier Abou Karim IV is believed to be the vessel which threw overboard at least 14 dead cows in Baltic sea, soon after leaving Kiel on Dec 27 13. Dead animals were washed up on the beaches of Denmark and Sweden. Vessel was en route from USA to Ust Luga with cargo of cows, an unknown number of them died during the voyage. It’s allowed to dump dead animals in the ocean, but not in landlocked sea like Baltic sea. Apparently crew decided to deal with dead animals in a way they found most appropriate, instead of disposing of them in first port of call. Some of the animals had been shot, had their ears mutilated. They also had their back legs tied together and their stomachs cut open. The ears had been cut to remove the earmarks identifying the animals, police said. The reason the stomachs had been slit open was probably to ensure the animal sank, and the back legs were probably bound so that a crane could grab and hoist the cow overboard. First bodies were found on Dec 31. Vessel left Kiel on Dec 27, called in Ust Luga on Dec 30, and from Ust Luga sailed to Klaipeda, Lithuania. As of 0500 UTC Jan 12 vessel was under way in Baltic sea near Bornholm, proceeding to Kiel, en route to Beirut. Most probably, not the Master, no operator know they’re the suspect in what’s actually, a crime. It is understood, that vessel is to be detained in Kiel or maybe in earlier for investigation.
