Tug sank off Long Island

On Jan 15, 2014, the "Sea Lion" sank off the Long Island shoreline after having suffered water ingress around 3 p.m. After the Coast Guard was alerted, the coordinates were called out, and one hour later two pilot boats pulled the four crew members from the frigid waters off Atlantic Beach. Upon reaching the tug, the bow was sticking two feet out of the water and one man was laying on top, while the ship submerged under him. Six-foot seas were coming over the bow. As soon as the first pilot boat arrived the tug went down stern first. At 4.11 p.m. it had sunk, leaving only bubbling air. The fog hampered the rescue efforts. Members of the Coast Guard Station Jones Beach and Station Sandy Hook arrived on scene at approximately 5:20 p.m. and medically evacuated the four mariners. The mariners were transferred to an EMS team standing by at the Atlantic Beach bridge. One of the mariners was reported as having serious injuries. The tug had been crossing the New York Harbor at the time of the incident. No oil leaks or environmental damage was reported.
