Tanker escorted to port after crew members spent 13 months at sea
The 'Schumi 7' was escorted to Phuket by a patrol ship of the Royal Thai Navy on March 8, 2022, after five crew members had requested help, one of them having not been ashore for 13 months. The Thaim Maritime Enforcement Command Centre Area 3 in Cape Panwa received the request on March 7 at 5.30 p.m. by Noppadol Boonmee, whe asked to be brought ashore. He had signed a nine-month contract, but it had been 13 months since the ship last called at Phuket. The claim was verified by the Phuket port officials. The ship was even nautical miles off Thap Lamu at that time en route to Bangladesh. The HTMS 'LAem Sing' and the patrol boat 'Tor 229' with labour officials on board intercepted the tanker with 18 crew members on board under command of Captain Suthichai Duangdara at around 8 p.m. After the tanker was escorted back to Ao Makham, all crew members were tested for Covid-19 before being allowed to disembark. All were tested negative. Officials were examining the employment contracts and investigating the employment conditions to determine whether legal action was to be taken.
