Tug salvaged grounded luxury yacht
On Feb 18 the 'SAR Mastelero' managed to pull the luxury yacht 'Neeveen' off the beach of Carchuna. A team of 18 shore based workers, 10 aboard the salvage ship and another four crew members of the SAR vessel 'Salvamar Gineah' participated in the refloating work. With pressurized balloons inside the egayacht and surrounding the hull of the ship, the yacht got enough buoyancy to tow it to the port of Motril. Before, 6,500 liters of diesel were drained from the tanks. Other solid contaminants were removed on Feb 14 and 15. A breakdown of the salvage ship paused the rescue. Salvamento Marítimo mobilized the 'Luz de Mar' from Algeciras to replace it, but the ship's crew managed to repair the engine. After changing the pulling chain from the stern to the bow, they managed to get the yacht towards deeper water where she gradually gained buoyancy. The way to the port will take a couple of hours. Once at the dock, the operators will take the boat to dry dock with a traveliftto assess the damage to find out the further options. The 'SAR Mastelero' will try to pull the grouded yacht 'Neeveen' from the Carchuna beach. Since Feb 11 the Maritime Captaincy, which depends on the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, and Salvmaento Marítimo have been acting on the beach to decontaminate the grounded yacht, abandoned by its owner with the intention of preventing environmental risks. Divers and experts tried in the morning of Feb 15, 2022, to continue with the decontamination tasks, extracting paints, solvents, batteries and other materials harmful to the marine environment, but they had to stop the actions. The Poniente storm made these tasks difficult and delayed the transferfrom the yacht. The storm could last for several more days. The Civil Guard, the National Police, the Maritime Service, Maritime Rescue, the Red Cross and the Motril Fire Department needed five hours to help the three occupants of the ship and their two pets, two large dogs, ahosre via a ladder. The owner, an elderly Frenchman, ran the ship aground on its journey from Puerto Banús to Almería. However, the owner disowned of the ship. AFter he refused to take charge of it, he has lost all rights to the yacht and that the intention was to put the boat up for auction or scrap it once it arrives at the Granada dock, depending the state of it. The yacht, valued at approximately 450,000 Euros, is 22 meters long, weighs 67 tons and is made up of three decks. The scrapping of a vessel of this type is valued at more than 10,000 Euros.
