Hamburg to the rescue

Tue Mar 27 22:43:07 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "FSL Hamburg" assisted in the rescue of a yacht crew late on Mar 26, 2012, however, a search continued for three missing sailors after the yacht was crippled in rough seas off southwestern Nova Scotia, killing one man and injuring two others. Nine men were on the yacht when it ran into trouble about 148 kilometres south of Cape Sable Island. The tanker "FSL Hamburg" heard the SOS call from the vessel and called the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax at 10:30 p.m. When the tanker arrived on scene, there were six people on the broken down vessel and three in the water. The tanker’s crew brought three people on board, while the Cormorant crew picked up three others — two were injured and one was dead. The men have been in the water since 12:30 a.m. There were wind gusts of up to 70 km/h and waves 10 metres high on the scene. The helicpoter crew spotted flares and headed toward the yacht. Conditions were dire. One survivor was waving frantically. A search-and-rescue technician, was lowered to the yacht to organize the rescue. A second technician ferried back and forth between the yacht and the helicopter with the survivors. Three men were hypothermic and injured. One of them was very weak and died on the way to Yarmouth Regional Hospital. The yact had been tossed in the waves, rolling from side to side almost in 90 degrees. Two aircraft remained in the area looking for the three missing men. A U.S. coast guard jet relieved a Canadian Hercules plane at about 10:30 a.m. so it could return to Greenwood for a crew change. The "FSL Hamburg" was en route from New York to Saint John, N.B. It's not known when it will arrive at its destination. The two injured men were in fair condition. The men were all from eastern Europe. The Cormorant involved in the rescue has returned to Greenwood.
