Crew member lost over board
On March 3, 2024, a crew member of the 'Santa Cruz's was lost overboard from the 'Santa Cruz' off the Eastern Cape coast after the ship had sailed from Durban on March 1, en route to Cape Town, about 22 nautical miles east of Cape Recife, near Port Elizabeth. Despite exhaustive efforts, the search for the man, who has not been located, was aborted without success. The response was coordinated by the MRCC in Cape Town, which at 6.42 p.m. LT issued a call for assistance to nearby vessels. The fishing vessel 'Portunity' was the closest and first to respond, with additional resources from the NSRI in Port Elizabeth and other vessels joining the search efforts through the night. SAMSA added that despite the participation of up to six other vessels and extensive search operations conducted by the NSRI, the seafarer was not found. It was reported that at the time of his disappearance, he was not wearing a life jacket. The MV Santa Cruz is continuing its journey to Cape Town, where SAMSA will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
First ship of Hamburg-Süd enters Luxembourg’s shipping register
Previously operated by Hamburg Süd under the Liberian flag, the container ship “Santa Cruz” (7,100 TEU) is now flying Luxembourg’s flag, said in the company's press release. The change of flag was carried out in the Port of Hamburg yesterday, March 26, 2013. The “Santa Cruz”, which sails in the Europe – South America East Coast liner service, is the first Hamburg Süd vessel to be entered in Luxembourg’s shipping register. The move brings Hamburg Süd a step closer to its aim of operating 60 per cent of its owned ships under European flags. Of the 36 Hamburg Süd-owned vessels, 18 currently fly the German flag and one that of Luxembourg. This puts the proportion of owned ships under a European flag at 53 per cent.
Santa Cruz christened in Shanghai
On Saturday, 23 July 2011, as part of a customer event, Hamburg Süd christened the container ship “Santa Cruz” in Shanghai. Sponsor of the “Santa Cruz” was Heike Schmidt, wife of Dr Heino Schmidt, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. The “Santa Cruz” is the fourth newbuilding of a series of ten identical container vessels each featuring a slot capacity of 7,100 TEU and fitted with 1,600 reefer container plugs. This makes her one of the largest ships ever built for Hamburg Süd. All ten vessels in this series are to be delivered by late 2012. Since her delivery at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) in Korea in early May 2011, the “Santa Cruz” has been operating in Hamburg Süd’s service between Asia and South Africa/South America East Coast (New Good Hope Express). The “Santa Cruz” is named after one of the four provinces in the Argentinian part of Patagonia. Argentina is one of Hamburg Süd’s most important markets in South America. Source: Hamburg Sud
