Fire in dry dock
Smoke development was noticed on the 'Samuel de Champlain', which was in a dry dock at St. Nazaire, undergoing repair works, on Sep 11, 2020, shortly after 10 a.m. Teh alerted firefighters identified a fire in a ventilation duct located in an empty capacity of 40 cubic metres. The 88 dock workers on board were evacuated from the vessel. The fire was rapidly extinguished. The repair works on board could be resumed in the afternoon.
MAN ES Delivers First European Dredger Conversion To Dual-Fuel Operation
Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has signed off on the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel operation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil (MGO), and which is now powered by MAN 35/44DF engines. The conversion of the ‘Samuel de Champlain’ is the first of its kind in Europe and is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast. The 117m, 8,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire. Its conversion involved the replacement of its diesel-electric MGO-burning propulsion system with 3 × MAN 6L35/44DF dual-fuel models, as well as the installation of onboard LNG storage facilities.
Alewijnse Marine to carry out electrical refit onboard TSHD Samuel de Champlain
Electrical system integrator Alewijnse has been awarded the contract for the electrical refit of the TSHD Samuel de Champlain, a 117-metre, 8500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger owned by GIE Dragages-Ports, based in Rouen, France and operated by the port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire. The vessel is to be converted from diesel-electric propulsion burning MGO to dual-fuel capability.
