Marine engineer convicted of bunker fraud
A chief engineer of a crude oil tanker has been convicted for shortchanging his employer of 200 tonnes of bunker fuel, according to joint statement of Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The accused, Pittis Stavros , was the chief engineer of the Sakura Princess, which was chartered by Navig8's VLCC pool V8 Pool. He will be sentenced today. He colluded with the bunker clerk and marine surveyor in shortchanging the supply delivery of 300 tonnes CST380 fuel oil to his ship, instead of the correct amount of 500 tonnes. The syndicate pocketed the 200 tonnes and sold it back to the company that supplied it, known as the "buy-back" arrangement in the bunkering industry.
