Cargo ship fined with $500,000, banned for Delaware Bay dumping
An international cargo ship’s unreported dumping off Delaware’s coast has led to a $500,000 fine and a U.S. port ban for its environmental crime. The U.S. Coast Guard and federal authorities based in Delaware prosecuted the ship’s company for its illegal dumping of more than 30 tons of oily bilge water and waste sludge into the Delaware Bay, according to court documents. From January-September 2013, the Bulk Victory discharged at least 34 metric tons of oily bilge water and waste sludge. U.S. District Court Judge Gregory M. Sleet at sentencing Thursday in Wilmington, ordered Pacific & Atlantic Shipmanagers Inc. – incorporated in the Marshall Islands and headquartered in Greece – to pay the fine immediately. He also imposed a three-year probation, banning the offending ship from calling on any ports in the United States during that time.
