Ship moored off Flushing due to fear of escape of hazardous materials
The Safety Region Zealand on Nov 16, 2016, examined whether hazardous materials were released from the "Rystraum" which sailed for the coast of Zeeland enroute from Ijmuiden to Antwerp. They were alerted by several complaints about a styrenic odor that came out of the cargo hold. But as a pilot boarded the ship one hour later, he smelt nothing. Nevertheless an MIRG-team of the fire brigade proceeded to the ship off Westkapelle on a boat of Rijkswaterstaat in order to carry out a measurement. The measurements revealed nothing. The police started investigating the odor. Until that investigation is completed, the vessel anchored on the Western Scheldt off Flushing. She was allowed to enter the port of Antwerp on Nov 17 and berthed in the Doel Dock at 4 a.m.
