Master fined for dumping garbage
The master of the "Hope Star" could have dodged a fine for dumping garbage on the Great Barrier Reef if he'd done it 40 kilometres further out to sea. The bulk carrier's Hope log was inspected by Gladstone port authorities on July 6, 2012. It was found the ship's crew had dumped food waste on the reef a week earlier. Australian maritime laws allow ships to dump food waste at sea as long as it's at least 12 nautical miles from the nearest land and not in a special area like the Great Barrier Reef. The "Hope Star" was about 40 km inside the reef area's boundary. The vessel's owners, Hope Star Shipping Company Ltd, were fined $5000 and its Chinese master was fined $300 in Cairns Magistrates Court.
