Longliner gutted by fire

A blaze gutted the 'Ruey Chien Tsai 112', which had caught fire on Aug 24, 2021, at 6.30 p.m. while it was moored in Port-Louis. Two days later the longliner was nothing more than a wreck at Bain des Dames. However, its fuel must be pumped to avoid an oil spill. Thus, the pumping exercise started on Aug 28 despite inclement weather. At this point, no oil leakage has been observed. Oil pumping operations started on Aug 28 and continued until Aug 29 at 6:30 p.m. An environmental survey was carried out on Aug 28 by the appointed marine scientist and no adverse effects on the marine ecosystem were observed. No oil spill or any other incident have been observed during the pumping operations. The total of contaminated diesel recovered from the wreck was 62 m3. Nine tanks have been pumped so far. As the pumping operations have caused the wreck to become lighter, an additional mooring rope has been placed to secure it to the shore. The Ecofuel Ltd. with the assistance of the crew continued to clear the debris and locate the other tanks on Aug 30 so that they can be pumped out too. The volume of contaminated diesel that would be recovered was expected to exceed the 65 m3. The exact amount of pure diesel recovered will only be known after the Ecofuel Ltd. has filtered out the water at its treatment plant. The MPA has taken all precautionary measures in case of any spillage and to avoid any damage to the marine environment.
