Vietnamese master abducted by Abu Sayyaf found dead
A Vietnamese master kidnapped in southern Philippine waters last year has been found killed. Pham Minh Tuan was found by police in Jolo, believed to have been executed by his Abu Sayyaf captors. Pham was the captain of the Vietnamese vessel Royal 16 hit by an Abu Sayyaf group near the island province of Basilan.
Abu Sayyaf linked with another attack, six crew abducted
Abu Sayyaf terrorists are believed to have been behind the raid on a Vietnamese bulker this morning and the subsequent kidnapping of six crew. The 5,610 dwt bulker Royal 16, owned by Quysang Trading Shipping, was transiting near the southern Philippine island of Basilian when it was stormed by armed men this morning. Two crewmembers, one of whom was wounded, escaped and were rescued by a local cargo ship in the area, authorities added. The Kuala Lumpur-based Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP ISC) warned earlier this week that slow moving ships with low freeboard should reroute away from the southern Philippines, if possible, as attacks in the area spike. http://splash247.com/abu-sayyaf-linked-another-attack-six-crew-abducted/
Cargo ship grounded on coral reef
The "Royal 16" ran aground on Dec 13, 2015, near Legazpi in southeast Luzon, after having been caught in the storm Nana. The anchor dragged and the vessel drifted aground about 50 meters from the 50 meters away from the shoreline in an area that is part of the coral reef system from southern Legazpi City to Manito town in the Polique Bay off Barangay, and suffered significant damage.
