Freighter threatened to run aground in Kiel
On Feb 9, 2020, the ‘Celtic Freedom‘, 2999 gt (IMO: 9250414), suffered an engine failure on Kiel-Holtenau roads when approaching the Kiel Canal locks, coming from Klaipeda. The ship immediately dropped anchor which, however, did not hold it in position in the gale force winds. ARound 5 p.m. the vessel drifted in an exclusion zone of the Navy off Kiel-Friedrichsort, and the emergency tug 'Bülk‘ was called to assist. It established a towing connection immediately and initially pulled the vessel back to the port's roads where the tug ‘Falckenstein‘ came to assist too. At 6.20 p.m. the 'Celtic Freedom' was berthed at the Lindenau Yard in Kiel-Friedrichsort. In the morning of Feb 10 the police started investigations on board and interrogated the crew. The vessel left the Lindenau-Yard again on Feb 10 at 4 p.m. after inspections of the police and repairs. The ship was headed to Bromborough with an ETA as of Feb 14, 5.30 p.m.It was yet to be investigated if the demagnezation installation of the Navy suffered damage too. Arklow Rally damaged when Thetis D passed too fast
Four severed stanchions aboard the "Arklow Rally", two broken lines and damage to a loading arm and gangway at the quay of the Holcim company were the consequences of excessive speed of the Liberian container m/v "Thetis D" in the Kiel Canal passing the inner port of Brunsbuttel on May 16, 2013, around 2 a.m.. The container ship was passing the canal eastbound. The suction of the ship caused the "Arklow Rally" to move, so that the fore and aft spring broke. The loading arm of the plant was torn out of its connection to the ship, so the loading process had to be stopped. The container ship continued its journey towards Kiel. Investigations were launched against the captain who had to pay a safety guarantee once the ship berthed in the lock Holtenau around 10 a.m.. The investigations of the water police Brunsbuttel continued. The "Arklow Rally" left bound for England the same morning.
