Grounded vessel in occupied Crimea region refloated
In the evening of March 12 the "River Eregli" was removed from the shallows at Alupka by the two tugs "MB-174" and "Afaline". The "River Eregli" managed to proceed to Sevastopol with own power which contradicted the previously stated versions of a malfunction of the engine as a cause of the grounding. The "River Eregli" had been enroute from Burgas to the port of Novorossiysk with a crew of seven Ukrainians, when in the afternoon March 11 the main engines were said to have failed at the southern tip of the Crimean peninsula 11 miles east of Yalta, and it began drifting towards the shoals. The tug "MB-174" of the Russian navy was sent to the dry-cargo ship, but upon its arrivak on the scene, the "River Eregli" had already touched the ground with the bow and subsequently ran aground. Damage, however, remained limited due to the calm weather. The diving vessel "VM 154" was deployed for an inspection of the hull and to assess the general situation. When experts of the Russian Black Sea Fleet confirmed that the ship had no leaks, the vessel could be pulled off and handed over to the Coast Guard. Ship with AIS signal turned off grounded in Crimea region
In the morning of March 12, 2017, the "River Eregli" ran aground at Alupka (Big Yalta) in calm weather. The latest AIS data were from a location in the Kerch Strait on Nov 30, 2016, which suggested the ship may have been carrying contraband. The ship was reported to have been enroute from Burgas to Noworossiysk with a Ukrainian crew of seven on board. On March 12 ships of the Russian Black Sea fleet were reported to have pulled the casualty off. In August 2015 the ship was purchased by Turkish Black Sea town of Eregli; the registered owner is the Azal Maritime Ship Trade Co. SA in Karadeniz.
