Refugee reception ship arrived in Harlingen
On Oct 31, 2022, the 'River Diamond' has arrived in Harlingen. In the coming months, the ship will serve as crisis emergency shelter for a maximum of 170 refugees who cannot go to Ter Apel. The first refugees will arrive in Harlingen next week. The ship will be prepared in the coming days. The municipality of Harlingen said that there may be a call for volunteers at a later date. Until Nov 1, refugees will still be received in the WTC in Leeuwarden. Because that reception is ending, the Security Region was looking for new places. The port of Harlingen is now one of them. The ship will remain in Harlingen for a maximum of six months and departed no later than May 1, 2023. After consultation between the municipality, the Port of Harlingen port authority and the Safety Region of Fryslân, it was decided to moor the ship at the fish auction jetty which is easy to secure and reach. Moreover, there are no immediate residents near the location in the port.
