Cargo ship disabled off Ushant
On Mar 7, 2015 around 10:00 a.m. the CROSS Corsen was contacted by the "Vanguard" which was enroute from St. Nazaire to Waterford with a cargo nearly 3,000 tons of citrus and seven crew members on board. The ship had suffered engine damage 17 miles off Ushant and had stopped to investigate and for repairs. The ship was drifting southward. At 11:15 a.m., the "Vanguard" reported that the crew had found out the cause of the trouble and needed three hours to fix it with own means. At 3:20 p.m., the ship was still adrift with about 1.8 knots towards the island of Ushant and signalled that it would take two more hours to repair the damage. As at 4:20 p.m. the ship still continued to drift, the maritime prefect ordered the emergency tug "Abeille Bourbon" to assist. The "Vanguard" was a little less than ten nautical miles off Ouessant at that time. At 6:00 p.m., the "Abeille Bourbon" reached the ship which was six miles south of the lighthouse Jument and took it in tow at 7 p.m. The convoy headed to Brest at the speed of seven knots and was in port around midnight where the crew continued the repairs so that the ship was able to resume its voyage in the night hours with an ETA at Waterford of Mar 9, 11 a.m. now.
