Woman died in capsize of viking ship replica
The 'Idar Ulstein' was involved in an SAR opeeration after the viking ship replica "Naddoddur" capsized at Stad off Måløy on the evening of Aug 27, 2024, leaving an American woman in her 20s missing. Five other people, from Switzerland and the Faroe Islands, were rescued and transported to Florø, where they were taken care of by crisis teams.. The search for the missing woman continued throughout the night until the morning of Aug 28, and the search was then moved into a new phase for a presumed dead person. The police have notified the family and next of kin of the missing person. The boat hadsailed from the Faroe Islands on Aug 24. By then the trip had already been postponed due to bad weather. The ten-metre wooden ship with two masts has been built according to Faroese tradition, and sailed from Tvøroyri in the direction of Norway. The trip was initially supposed to take between three and five days. On Aug 27 at 6 p.m. the first mayday came from the ship off Måløy. Ahelicopter was sent to the position, and that nearby vessels were called. Another alarm came an hour later, and then the SAR operation went full force with two helicopters and the lifeboat. On Aug 28 just after 05:30, a.m. the MRCC announced that the rescue operation itself had ended. Both rescue helicopters, rescue boats, Coastguard ships and several commercial and civilian ships in the area had participated amid very difficult search conditions, both from the air and the sea. There was poor visibility, winds of around 20 meters per second and 4-5 meter high waves, and also occasional strong showers. On Aug 28 at 8.10 a.m. the missing woman was found dead in the water and the body was recovered, Report with photo: https://www.vg.no/nyheter/i/eMzqoR/nrk-redningsaksjon-ved-stad-etter-melding-om-fartoey-med-seks-personer-i-noed
