Cable barge with cable for Northsea wind farms capsized enroute to Bremerhaven
The cable barge "AMT Explorer", while being towed by the "Red Husky", capsized and sank in the Mediterranean Sea some 50 miles southwest of Sardinia island southern tip on July 3, 2014. The convoy was en route from Naples cable factory to Bremerhaven, with a power cable with a value of 28 Million Euro owned by cable manufacturer Prysmian and destined to connect the TenneT-operated Butendiek and Deutsche Bucht wind farms offshore Germany. The barge crew was saved. Smit Salvage was contracted for salvage works, with the hope of recovering either both barge and cable, or at least the cable which was produced by the cable manufacturer Prysmian.
