Miraculously, no one was hurt when the SUSAKI WING slammed into the Georgia-Pacific Wauna mill's dock Friday - but things might have turned out differently if the accident hadn't happened during a shift change, a mill official said to TDN.com on Saturday. Several employees at the paper mill 11 miles west of Clatskanie, Ore., heard the 440-foot Susaki Wing blast its fog horn before it smashed into the dock, a barge loaded with paper products and a large metal building at 5:53 p.m. Friday, said Kristi Ward, the mill's public affairs manager. According to the Coast Guard, the vessel lost propulsion, but authorities haven't determined why yet. Saturday, Coast Guard inspectors boarded the ship, which was anchored in Longview, and checked its main engine, steering systems and hull damage. They also tested the crew for drugs and alcohol, said Petty Officer Nathan Bradshaw, adding results would be known in a few days. The Coast Guard says a cargo vessel carrying lumber hit a pier and two barges at the Wauna Georgia Pacific paper mill near Clatskanie in northwest Oregon. No injuries or pollution were reported after the Susaki Wing out of Panama struck the pier early Friday evening after losing propulsion. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter crew and a motor lifeboat crew from Astoria. Local fire crews also responded. One of the barges was pushed to shore by a tugboat because paper mill staff worried it might sink. Coast Guard vessel inspectors will be investigating what caused the ship to lose propulsion.
