Last victim of ferry sinking recovered

Sun Mar 06 17:50:01 CET 2016 Timsen

Rescuers on Mar 6 recovered the body of the last of five people declared missing after the "Rafelia 2" sank in the Bali Strait. The body was retrieved at 11.55 a.m. Police needed to conduct a post-mortem examination to formally identify the body and determine that it was indeed the ship's captain Bambang Adi, the only victim still missing. The Ferry was carrying 81 people and sailing to Ketapang Port in East Java's Banyuwangi district from Gilimanuk Port in Bali's Jembrana district, when she capsized at around 1 p.m. on Mar 4 about 500 meters from Ketapang Port after its bilge compartment sprung a leak. A joint rescue team on Mar 5 had located four bodies of people who did not survive the accident: the ship's navigator Puji Puwono as well as passengers Agus Tia, Masruroh and her 18-month-old son Ramlan. The ship had 14 crew members and carried six-internship vocational school students of SMK Pelayaran Kalipuro, Banyuwangi, several trucks and pick up cars.

76 Rescued, Five Missing After Bali Ferry Capsizes

Sun Mar 06 15:09:49 CET 2016 arnekiel

Five people, including an 18-month-old baby are still missing while 76 others have been rescued after a ferryboat sank in the Bali strait on Friday at around noon, an official said on Saturday. Vessels, inflatable boats and three teams of divers from the Banyuwangi Water Police, the Navy and the National Search and Rescue Agency have been deployed since Saturday morning. "The search is also conducted with helicopters because sinking victims are usually found floating," said Didi Hamzar of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office. Data from the office shows five passengers are still missing, including the ship helmsman, boat crew members, a woman and her 18-month-old baby and another passenger identified Agus Mangtia. "The number of passengers who survived is 76," Didi added. They are currently being treated at a number of nearby hospitals. The KMP Rafelia II, which was sailing to Ketapang Port in East Java's Banyuwangi district from Gilimanuk Port in Bali's Jembrana district, capsized at around 1 p.m. local time after its bilge compartment reportedly sprung a leak. The ferryboat sank about 500 meters from Ketapang Port. At least 29 vehicles, mostly trucks and minibuses, went down with the vessel. http://jakartaglobe.beritasatu.com/news/76-rescued-five-missing-bali-ferry-capsizes/

Ferry sank in Bali Strait

Fri Mar 04 11:17:53 CET 2016 Timsen

On Mar 4, 2016, the "Rafelia II", sailing from Gilimanuk Port in Bali to Ketapang Port, in Banyuwangi, East Java, sank. The ferry had left the port of Gilimanuk in Bali at 12:50 a.m. and sank 15 minutes later in the Bali Strait, which connects Bali with Java. The ship flipped in less than a minute. Official statements about how many people were rescued ranged from 41 to 71. According to the Bali's Search and Rescue Agency the ship's manifest listed 51 people on board including 14 crew members. 10 people were missing based on the manifest. The Bali Search and Rescue Office was still searching for missing people. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI AL) deployed two patrol boats to conduct work. Several of the passengers had already been rescued by fishing boats when the rescue team arrived. They have also deployed a helicopter to help with the operation. The 32 vehicles on board went down with the ship. The cause of the sinking has not been determined. Preliminary investigations showed the incident was caused by a leak that occurred just as the ferry had departed Gilimanuk.
