Stranded ship's crew running low on fuel and provisions

Mon Oct 15 13:10:59 CEST 2018 Timsen

Members of the crew of the "St Elias" said they were running out of food and water as the vessel has been anchored off the coast of Crete for the last four weeks. The vessel has beem abandoned by its owners and managers and the 20 crew members, all Ukrainian, have not been paid for three months. The vessel has been anchored off the small port of Kaloi Limenes on the southern coast of Crete.. The men ran out of money, and the few provisions that remained on the ship were rotting away. One more major concern is that the vessel was running out of water and fuel. There was little fuel for the generator. It will last for perhaps another two days and without electricity, the ship will be out of control. Phjotos proved the bad state of the interior of the ship that is in urgent need of major repairs. Detained ship to be inspected again

Tue Aug 14 12:47:38 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "St. Elias" which has been banned from sailing and was moored off La Pallice in pos. 46° 4.60' N 001° 14.21' W since July 26, 2018, by the authorities, waiting to be repaired after a technical failures discovered during an inspection, was to be inspected again on Aug 14. The Greek shipowner was cooperating in the efforts to get the ship sailing again. The Polish classification society was on board in order to hand out the necessary certificate after the requested repairs. In early July in Lorient, the inspectors had identified 30 defieincies concerning the engine, generators, navigation devices and moorings. Repair costs amounted to some tenthousands of Euros. The Romanian crew landed in Lorient and received its salary of 65,000 Euros. Ukrainian successors have come aboard since. The ITF (International Seafarers' Union) wanted to board the ship and meet the sailors to learn more about their living conditions. For this, the ITF asked that the ship dock at La Rochelle. A priori, the crew currently has water and food. In La Rochelle the "St. Elias" originally was to load a cargo of grain. The chartering was canceled afterwards because of the great delay.
