Barges refloated

The "Poznan" was refloated 8,5 hours after its grounding on the Scheldt near the Melle bridge. The barge had got stuck between a river bank and the pillar that indicated its position. She had come from Merelbeke locks with containers at 10 a.m. Probably the skipper did not rate the river bend properly, so he took it too wide to pass underneath the Mellebrug near the St. Martin's Church. The ship allided with a pillar and got stuck on the shore with the foreship. At low tide aroudn 3 p.m. the ship started tilting so the barge "Ludivine" was called from Dendermonde to unload the other ship. When that did not work, she went alongside to stabilize it. In the afternoon the shipping police called a tugboat to detach the "Poznan" with the high tide around 6.30 p.m. But the "Ludivine" did another attempt at 6.20 p.m. to get the "Poznan" off. Even before the tug arrived on the spot, the ship was free and sailing towards Wetteren. Barge aground on the Scheldt

On the Scheldt in Melle, the "Poznan", 1337 ts (ENI-No.: 06003734), ran aground in the morning aof Jan 2, 2018. The barge was loaded with 28 containers of sugar and Vietnamese beer. It was expected to start moving again at high tide after 6 p.m. Earlier, another ship had tried to free the "Poznan" without result. She came from the locks of Merelbeke but went off course aat the height of the Scheldt bridge. It rammed a pole and eventually got stuck on the left river bank. Police and fire brigade were quick on the spot to keep the ship, which was threatening to capsize, afloat. Currently, the "Poznan" was being stabilized by another ship. There were no hazardous substances on board and there was no hindrance to shipping traffic for the time being.
