Ukrainian refugees to be moved on another ship
About 100 Ukrainian refugees who have been staying on the 'Poseidon' in Urk for two years will soon have to move temporarily. The ship will undergo an inspection and maintenance. Another ship, the 'Alessia', will temporarily arrive in the port of Urk, which is slightly larger. The residents have already started preparations for the temporary move this week together with Caritas employees. The actual move to the 'Alessia' will take place on April 15, 20ß24. After the inspection and maintenance, the 'Poseidon' will return to the port of Urk in May. Then the Ukrainians will move back.
Contract for reception of Ukrainian refugees extended
Refugees from Ukraine continue to be received in the port of Urk on the 'Poseidon'. The municipality of Urk has extended the agreement with the vessel for a period of 12 months. The contract was due to expire in November, but the refugees cannot yet safely return to their country. In the past period, an inventory has been made of how - after mid-November - the Ukrainian refugees can best be housed within Urk. This inventory has shown that extending the contract with the ship is the best solution, given the capacity of the municipality and the capacity of the port. The costs of reception are reimbursed by the state. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the municipality of Urk, in collaboration with the volunteer organization Caritas, has set up a complete organization that is involved in the reception of Ukrainian refugees: reception, care, education, welfare. The refugees currently staying at the reception location are largely integrated into the Urk society. For example, most residents on Urk have found work, their children go to school on Urk or in the region and they have become accustomed to life on Urk. In addition to the efforts of welfare work, churches, care and educational institutions, it is nice to see that many volunteers are still committed to receiving Ukrainian refugees through Caritas. Let's work together to ensure that Ukrainian refugees continue to experience Urk's hospitality.
