Allision with bridge
A cement barge being towed by the uninspected towing vessels "Shannan C" and "Portier I" allided with the Chef Menteur Pass Highway 90 Bridge on Oct 26, 2011. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from the Louisiana Department of Transportation at 11:12 a.m., about the accident, which required closing the waterway to marine traffic near the bridge. The estimated cost of damage to the bridge was approximately $100,000. Currently, the bridge is stuck in the open position and is closed to all marine vessels transiting through or near the bridge on the Industrial Canal. Investigating officers from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans and bridge engineers with LADOT are on scene. "We are working with the bridge engineers to ensure the safety of the bridge and determine the cause of the allision," said Lt. j.g. Thomas Hedden, an investigating officer for Sector New Orleans.
