Trimaran towed to Newlyn
The ' Pir 2' that was left capsized four miles off Land's End after its skipper was rescued from its hull has finally reached the safety of Newlyn harbour following a complex salvage operation. The 50ft trimaran capsized on July 14, 2022, at around 5 p.m on on its journey from Pointe-à-Pitre on the island of Grande-Terre, in Guadeloupe. A Royal Navy helicopter which was in the area training rushed to the scene and rescued the skipper, who had been found clinging to the hull. With both Sennen and Penlee lifeboats also on their way to the stricken yacht, the first vessel on the scene responding to the mayday call was the local fishing boat Guardian, the crew of which had witnessed the trimaran capsizing and the sailor being winched to safety. With the trimaran upside-down, unmanned and in danger of sinking, fishermen Tom Mcclure and Tom Lewis made the decision to try and save it. And so began a complicated salvage operation which would not see yacht the right way up and in the safety of Newlyn harbour until more than 40 hours later. After towing trimaran four miles overnight, the fishing boat 'Guardian' stayed out on Mounts Bay off Newlyn, unable to bring the yacht in any further because of the mast. Early on July 16, the capsized yacht was towed back out of the harbour into Mount's Bay, so that the salvage team on the Obervargh and Danmark could attempt to right it.
