Fire in cargo hold quickly contained
An excavator in a cargo hold of the "Phaedra" which was berthed in Portland Port caught fire on May 28, 2018. Portland Port Police officers, along with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue attended the fire. Two crews from Portland, two from Weymouth plus their aerial ladder platform crew, two from Dorchester, and Maiden Newton's breathing apparatus support unit and four officers were mobilised to the fire at Outer Coaling Pier. Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the fire using equipment on board the vessel. The fire could be contained to the plant machinery inside the hold of the ship. One person suffered minor injuries and received care by South Western Ambulance paramedics on the scene for smoke inhalation. The recovery of the plant machinery took place in the morning of May 29.
