Medevac off Port Elizabeth

On March 15 a 9 a.m. the NSRI Port Elizabeth and NSRI ASR (Airborne Sea Rescue) were alerted to reports of a 35 year old Chinese male sailor injured with burns to the face onboard the ´"Pacific Garnet". The ship had alerted the on March 14 reporting the injury to the sailor. The ship was diverted to head towards Port Elizabeth. An SA Air Force (SAAF) 15 Squadron Charlie Flight helicopter was activated by MRCC and accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic and 2 NSRI ASR rescue swimmers. An airborne rescue operation aboard a SAAF 15 Squadron Charlie Flight BK-117 helicopter launched and rendezvoused with the vessel 18 nautical miles off Kenton-On-Sea. An NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were placed on high alert. Telkom Maritime Radio Services assisted with Marine VHF radio communications. The helicopter landed onboard and the EMS rescue paramedic and 2 NSRI rescue swimmers deplaned and were taken to the patient onboard the ship who was in the care of ships medics and found him to be in a stable condition with facial burns believed to have been sustained while welding. The patient, walking wounded, was taken on board the helicopter and in the care of the EMS rescue paramedic he was airlifted to hospital in Port Elizabeth. SA Police Services and EMS were on the scene at the hospital to receive the patient and Nelson Mandela Bay Traffic Services assisted at the hospital landing zone. On the SAAF helicopter’s arrival at the hospital the patient has been taken into the care of hospital staff for further treatment. The operation was completed at 1 p.m,.
