Tight security in Tokaimura for shipment of plutonium
The "Pacific Egret", being heavily guarded and armed, underway with a cargo of 331 kg plutonium from Japan to the USA, arrived under tight security in the port of Tokaimura on Mar 21, 2016. The plutonium had been provided by the USA, Britain and France decades ago for Japan for research purposes and should be disposed of in accordance with a bilateral agreement in the USA. The police tightened security measures around the harbour, while anti-nuclear activists followed the vessel with a boat. The ship will take about two months to reach a nuclear plant in South Carolina. Pacific Egret on her way to Japan with nuclear fuel on board
A cargo of highly radioactive nuclear fuel left the French port of Cherbourg on April 17 on board the specialist British ships, PACIFIC HERON and PACIFIC EGRET. Both ships are being used to transport the nuclear fuel, according to a statement issued by the ships’ owners, Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL). It said that the two ships will travel via the Cape of Good Hope, across the Indian Ocean and presumably south of Australia and into the south-western Pacific and to arrive in Japanese waters in mid-June.
