Hazmat accident in Long Beach
6000 gallons propyl acetate, a flammable chemical compound, spilled from a container tank on board of the "Harbour Bridge" which was berthed at the Pier G Berth 232 at the ITS Long Beach Container Terminal on Aug 6, 2017, at 09.46 a.m. A hazardous materials unit, an SAR unit and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Two Long Beach fire boats and one of the city’s lifeguard rescue boats deployed a 1,000-foot boom in the water alongside the ship as a precautionary measure against environmental damage. 12 crew members suffered minor injures. 11 injured workers were treated at the scene and released, with the exception of one worker who was transported to a hospital. One firefighter was injured with minor injuries unrelated to the spill and transported to a hospital. Rescue crews set a 1,000-foot perimeter as a precaution to protect the environment. The leaking container was offloaded. The container ship had arrived at Long Beach on Aug 3, coming from Busan.
