Casualty to be drydocked in Durban

Thu Mar 29 09:49:01 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Akiba" which went aground in the approaches to Maputo harbour recently and which was moored in Richard's Bay since Mar 22, 2012, was towed to Durban where the ship was booked to enter dry dock for a hull inspection. Fairmount Marine’s tug "Fairmount Glacier" had assisted in the refloating of the bulk carrier after it had grounded offshore Maputo, Mozambique. The salvage operation was conducted by Greek salvage company Five Oceans Salvage under a Lloyd’s Open Form. The "Fairmount Glacier" was mobilized from Cape Town, South Africa. After an unsuccessful first attempt, the "Fairmount Glacier" refloated the ship on its second try. After towing the vessel to a safe anchor position where the damage could be assessed, the tug towed the "Akiba" to Richards Bay where the "Akiba"’s cargo was discharged. The "Fairmount Glacier" made its final tow of the Akiba, delivering the ship to Durban. Report with photo: http://www.breakbulk.com/ocean/fairmount-glacier-refloats-akiba-04-25
