Vessels responding to sunken ship
The owner of the 'Nordana Sophie' has dispatched two vessels to the position where the vessel sank. One has been moored to monitor the area while the other vessel was transporting divers to access the vessel and to clean up the oil spill. More than three kilometers of coastline in the Ky Loi commune (Ky Anh town) have been covered with oil deposits and debris after the ship sank with 178 tons of oil on board near Son Duong port.
Work to contain oil spill
The Port Authority of the Ha Tinh province was planning to siphon the oil that remained on board the 'Nordana Sophie'. Divers will be dispatched to attach pipes into the sunken vessel to extract the oil. Navy ships have also been used to put oil containment booms and buoys around the area where the vessel sank to avoid oil from spreading further. More than 100 people were mobilized on Nov 30 to start the clean-up operations of the oil that spilled from the ship. More than three kilometres of coastline have been affected by the oil leak. It was estimated that it may take half a month before the vessel can be salvaged. Bad weather conditions have hampered the efforts of divers to inspect the sunken vessel since the wreck.
Wreck started leaking oil
On November 29, the Ha Tinh Maritime Port Authority said that a part of the 180 tons fuel oil in the tanks of the 'Nordana Sophie' which caosized in the waters of the Ha Tinh province began spilling into the sea, but the amount of oil spilled out was small. The Ha Tinh Maritime Port Authority was closely monitoring developments and coordinate with the ship owner to hire a specialized company to handle oil spills. I On Nov 28 at 4 a.m. the vessel had departed from the seaport in Hong Kong bound to the Vung Ang - Son Duong port, Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh province for loading purposes. Two kilometers rom Ron Cape and about 10 kilometers from Vung Ang - Son Duong port, water rushed into the engine room quickly, causing the ship to tilt and start sinking. By noon all 18 crew members had been taken off and brought ashore safely. At 1 p.m. the ship had completely sunk. Before the sinking, the fuel valves could be closed to prevent oil spills.
