600 migrants rescued off Porto Palo
On April 16 the Italian Coast Guard has rescued 600 migrants who were on board a fishing vessel in distress in the Maltese SAR zone about 140 miles south of southeast Sicily, near Porto Palo. Strong winds and rough seas made the rescue very difficult. The migrants were taken on board a Romanian Frontex patrol boat and the 'Nave Peluso' and were to be disembarked in Augusta and Catania. The 'Peluso' arrived in the port of Catania with 201 of the approximately 600 migrants on April 16. Another 111 had already been taken ashore aboard the Romanian ship. After disembarking, the migrants were transferred to the structure built in the former vaccination hub of San Giuseppe La Rena, where the other 201 who arrived with the Coast Guard ship also were temporarily transferred. Another 299 rescued migrants arrived during the night aboard the Navy ship 'Libeccio' in Augusta, in the Syracuse area. After disembarking, they were transferred to the tensile structure in the commercial port. Patrol boat rescued 400 distressed migrants
800 people got in distress on a fishing boat in the Ionian Sea. 400 of them were rescued by the 'Nave Peluso'. Of these, 150 were transferred to other patrol boats. The first report was made by the Alarm Phone organization, reporting 400 people on board a boat in difficulty in the SAR area under Malta's jurisdiction. The boat had departed from Tobruk, and in the evening of April 9, 2023, it took on water and ran out of fuel, while the captain would have abandoned the boat, which was supplied with fuel since.
