32 people rescued from burning charter ship
The 'Nave Diciotti' has put out a huge fire on board a charter sailing vessel off the coast of Lampedusa in the afternoon of Oct 8, along with the patrol boats 'CP 319', 'CP 2105' and 'CP 324', the latter with two firefighters on board. At the time of the fire, there were 30 passengers and two crew members on board the ship. All were rescued and taken to the port. The sailing ship, completely destroyed, finally sank in the waters north of the island. Absorbent pads were laid out in order to avoid any pollution caused by fuel leakage. Patrol boat assisted 40 migrants
On Oct 5, the 'Nave Diciotti' assisted an 8-m-boat off the coast of Lampedusa with 40 Sudanese, Eritrean and Ethiopian people on board, including a woman. The group, having already landed on the Favarolo pier, reported that they had left from Sfax, paying 1,500-2,000 Tunisian dinars each. Meanwhile, there are 175 migrants already present in the Lampedusa hotspot, including 16 unaccompanied minors. On Oct 5, there were six landings with a total of 188 people. After yesterday's transfer of 63 refugees, and on Oct 6 too, the ferry 'Sansovino' will move 120 or 130 people towards Porto Empedocle. The Prefecture of Agrigento arranged the transfer, which includes 16 minors.
"Nave Diciotti" arrived in Reggio Calabria with 698 migrants
The "Nave Diciotti" arrived in Reggio Calabria carrying 698 migrants rescued at sea in the last few hours while they were on board various boats. Disembarkation operations are underway, coordinated by the prefecture of Reggio, which will involve a total of 398 people. Among them were 105 women, some of whom were pregnant, 100 men and 193 minors, 143 of whom were unaccompanied. The migrants were all sub-Saharan and Tunisian nationals. The other 300 who were part of the group were to be disembarked in the port of Messina. The prefecture of Reggio has arranged some buses on board which 125 migrants will be accompanied to a school, where a first reception center has been set up and where the people who have arrived will be identified while waiting to be transferred to various locality in Calabria. The remaining 273 migrants, however, will be distributed throughout the national territory, based on the distribution plan prepared by the Ministry of the Interior.
