Search ends for man who jumped from ship 'Heidi Plus'
Despite an extensive search in and around the Port of Galveston on Friday, May 18th, 2012, authorities were unable to find a Lebanese crewman who disappeared after jumping from a ship into the harbor. Ahmad Faras, 36, jumped from the Heidi Plus on Friday between 7 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Faras was the second mate aboard the Beirut-registered ship docked at Pier 34. Workers were scheduled to load cattle Monday for transport to Russia, Cristina Galego, a spokeswoman for the port, said. Port police said Faras has black hair, brown eyes, is 6 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds. Police said Faras landed in the water but there was no immediate word on whether he made it ashore. The Galveston Island Beach Patrol sent a boat, and Galveston police used a canine to search the area. Authorities called off the search Friday afternoon. Port operations were unaffected by the jumper, Galego said. http://galvestondailynews.com/story/315446
MV NOA 7913153
The Gibraltar Port Authority deployed anti-pollution vessels and equipment to contain an oil spill in Gibraltar waters yesterday, the Gibraltar Chronicle reports. Around 200 litres of heavy fuel oil were spilt during a bunkering operation between the locally-based bunker tanker Aegean Princess and the reefer ship Heidi Plus. Most of the oil was contained between the two ships and port vessels, together with local specialist Brightside, moved to collect the rest and apply dispersants.
