Investigation into listing incident
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has ordered an investigation into the listing of the 'Cagayan de Oro' off Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental in the night of Nov 11. The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) already ordered the suspension of operations for the ferry, operated by Cokaliong Shipping Lines, on Nov 13. The Passenger Ship Safety Certificate (PSSC) for the ship will remain suspended until a thorough inspection and evaluation of all the incident-related information has been completed.
Ferry started to list in stormy weather
The 'Filipinas Cagayan De Oro' started to list 10 degrees to port side in the vicinity of Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, on Nov 12, 2023 at around 08:05 p.m. en route to Cebu, due to strong winds caused by bad weather, which caused unstable cargo to shift. The ship returned and safely arrived at the Macablan Wharf in Cagayan De Oro at 11.20 p.m. The Philippine Coastguard assisted in the disembarkation of the 448 passengers, all in good physical condition, and four rolling cargoes on board. The Maritime Safety Services Command (MSSC) was instructed to investigate and check the safety procedures and protocols implemented by the shipping company and its crew. The MSSC suspended the passenger ship safety certificate (PSSC) of the vessel. The officer-in-charge of Marina Northern Mindanao (Region 10) mentioned that the incident has raised concerns about the vessel's seaworthiness, leading to the suspension of its safety certificate in accordance with the provisions of Republic Act 9295 (Domestic Shipping Development Act of 2004), among others.
