Fire and oil spill during wreck removal

Wed Apr 25 17:58:52 CEST 2018 Timsen

On Apr 24 at 10 a.m. during the wreck removal operation, a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Berra G" at the grounding site off Ereğli. The local municipality fire brigade team immediately attended the scene and began fire extinguishing operations. Slight oil leaks were noted drifting from the vessel to the sea. No one was injured in the incident. The fire was caused by welding sparks. Grounding at Ereğli

Fri Jan 19 16:08:39 CET 2018 Timsen

In Zonguldak's Ereğli district the "Berra G" was dragged onto the ground by a storm in the night of Jan 18, 2018. The crew of 12 were rescued by Ereğli Municipality fire crews. The vessel had been enroute from İzmir to Rostov-on-Don and stranded in the shipyard area in Ereğli-Alaplı. When it hit the rocks it split in the middle. A large number of ambulances were sent by the Ereğli Municipality Fire Department. The crew was evacuated via ropes. Among them were 5 Azerbaijanis, 3 Georgian, 1 Ukrainian and 3 Turks. After about 1 hour and 15 minutes of rescue work, all were safe ashore and delivered to the emergency service crews. The Coast Guard and port authority officials said measures would be taken to prevent the 26 tons of diesel from leaking into the sea. They were to be discharged with the tank trucks. Oil booms were laid out, and on Jan 20 the fuel removal operation was in progress.
